Announcement follows
The application period for the 2010 fellowship programmes has closed. The advertisement for next year’s fellowship programmes will be available in December 2010, including the new application forms and the full details.
In April 1996, the UN Secretary–General inaugurated UNU-IAS as an in–house community of scholars mandated to research issues located at the intersection between societal and natural systems. The Institute’s mission is to advance knowledge and to promote learning for policy making to meet the challenges of sustainable development. As an advanced studies institute, UNU-IAS is forward-looking and multidisciplinary.
Since October 2000, UNU-IAS offers Postdoctoral Fellowships for recent PhD graduates to provide them the opportunity to put the knowledge and expertise acquired during their doctoral research to practical policy-relevant use. So far, nearly 40 fellows from some 20 countries have passed through the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme. Of those completing the programme about one third have been women, and developing country participants have outnumbered developed country participants.
About two Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded each year for a period of ten months, starting in September.
The fellowship programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:
* develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute,
* widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of UNU-IAS, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators,
* become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system, and
* link with other UNU-IAS and UNU PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows.
The fellows are resident at UNU-IAS in Yokohama or UNU-IAS OUIK in Kanazawa, Japan for the full term of the fellowship. This gives them the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by UNU-IAS. The Institute’s close links with Japanese affiliated professors and visiting professors from key universities and think tanks in Japan also allows fellows to link into the broader Japanese academic and research community.
Eligibility and Conditions
Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. (or at least successfully defended their doctoral dissertation), in an area broadly associated with the UNU-IAS thematic focus, prior to the application deadline. Language proficiency in English is essential. Applicants from developing countries and women are particularly encouraged to apply.
UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded for a period of 10 months. The starting date of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is 1 September. Successful applicants are required to be in Yokohama by this date. Residency in Yokohama for the full duration of the fellowship is required.
Fellows are provided with their own desk in a dedicated study room in the Institute, administrative support and desktop computing. Fellows have access to the UNU Library in Tokyo which includes an excellent collection of UN documents. They also have access via the UNU Library to various Japanese university libraries and computer databases. A limited range of other, more specialized computer hardware and software may also be available.
The fellowship provides for a monthly stipend of JPY290,000 from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted (see below). A one-time only installment of JPY 80,000 will be granted to each fellow at the beginning of the programme for adjustment expenses and incidental costs. UNU-IAS provides fellows with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Narita Airport.
Eligibility for a second 10-month appointment may be considered based on the Fellow’s performance.

Searching for scholarships is a time consuming and, sometimes, costly experience that, with the right tools and guidance, can be relatively stress free and efficient. Knowing what sources to use, who to consult and basic strategy techniques can save a lot of unnecessary paperwork and time.
School Resources – Use Them!
Start with the easiest and most practical resource you have – your guidance counselor or advisor. Schools hire guidance counselors and advisors to help you make the transition into higher education and to assist in every manner possible when making that transition. Guidance counselors often have access to scholarship materials and applications that are available only to students at your school or are difficult to gain access to through other conventional methods. Additionally, if your school has a career center or library section devoted to college preparation, you have a good chance of finding scholarship materials as well. Look for books containing scholarships, different brochures promoting scholarships or other materials that may include such information. If you know what colleges you’re most interested in attending, or already know where you will be attending college, then check with the financial aid office at those schools. Like high school specific scholarships, colleges frequently offer scholarships to students applying to or attending their school. Because the number of applicants for open scholarships is so large, it is always a good idea to start with scholarships available only to students at the high school you currently attend or at the college you plan on attending because the applicant pool is narrowed significantly.
Open Up Your Choices
After exhausting your resources at the respective career centers and financial aid offices, you can begin your scholarship search through the internet. The internet offers a wealth of scholarship information and opportunities, with some websites containing thousands of different scholarships. Many of these websites allow you to create a profile about yourself containing your grade point average, standardized test scores and extracurricular activities which will be compiled and then matched with scholarships meeting your profile. Some of these websites require a fee to use their services. Be sure you have used all other tools at your disposal before paying for a service that will provide you with a list of scholarships you are likely to find elsewhere for free.Be specific and particular when reviewing the criteria scholarships require. If the scholarship qualifications include a grade point average of 3.2 and you have a 3.0, it generally isn’t worth your time to apply. Scholarship selection boards begin by narrowing their applicant pool down to students who qualify based on their initial application before reviewing essays, letters of recommendation and extracurricular activities. If your numbers don’t match the required criteria, all your time in preparing your application will likely be for nothing. Selection boards have a lot of applications to review, and they have to begin narrowing down their pool by first taking only applicants who meet the initial criteria. Instead, try to find scholarships which are specially tailored to some attribute you have that others may not. Many scholarships are based on the location you live in, gender, ethnicity or background. However, if, for example, your grade point average is close to meeting the specified criteria of the scholarship and you feel your grade point average will rise to meet that criteria once your last semester’s grades are added, then apply for the scholarship.
It All Pays in the End
The search for a scholarship can be lengthy and finding scholarships you are qualified for can be even more stressful. But your time and effort will pay off in the end if you have carefully sought out scholarships for which you qualify and have applied correctly. After all, the thousands of dollars a scholarship provides is well worth the hours spent finding the right scholarship for you.
